I've been listening to The Doors a lot lately. Always been fascinated with Morrison's lyrics, poetry, personality, stage presence, etc. And the guitar/keyboard interplay.
I used to play with Doors cover bands a lot when I was in college. It was fun, and the keyboard parts are surprisingly challenging. On a similar but somewhat unrelated note, the version of "People Are Strange" done by Echo and The Bunny Men is really cool. I don't know how to spell the Doors' keyboard player's last name, but he played on the cover as well with some new equipment - well new to the 1980s.
But yes the Doors, especially the rare and odd stuff, is quite interesting to listen to.
Ray Manzarek.
They're one of my favorite bands. The Soft Parade is probably one of the best songs that came out of the 60's, and that's saying something coming from me, since the 60's were, in my opinion, the best time period for music, so I tend to focus on rarities and unknown bands from that era quite a lot too. YOU CANNOT PETITION THE LORD WITH PRAYER! Yes, The River Knows is also one of my favorite songs to listen to when I'm depressed, I can sit there and listen to that song on repeat, and it seems to help me somehow.
Of course, even their hits are great, especially Break On Through, Five to One, and Hello I Love You. Oh, and I agree about his poetry. There's one that I can't remember the name of off the top of my head that was recorded for the American Prayer album that's quite amusing, it's all about the death of his cock.
Lament for my cock, sore and crucified. Something like that.
My hubby is a big Doors fan. Back in the days of Napster, we downloaded a bunch of Doors studio out takes and rare interviews. Of course, I lost most of them when switching from 1 computer to another. way to go me.
Anyway, their lyrics are great. Morrison was one strange individual. lol Amazingly tallented and enjenious but very very strange. lol
How maany of you saw the Doors movie? I watched that in the theater when it first came out in 1991. What an amazing show that was. It wasn't really like going to a movie, it was one big bong concert after another. Lost a lot of respect for him watching him beat chicks and pull their hair, apparently this was not an exaggeration by the movie which usually happens. But I still love the music.
And the movie makes some sense out of the frequent spontaneous references to a truck load of dead Indians in the road. (Native Americans, for you people born after 1985 or so).
Yes sir it was an exageration. The surviving members didn't like it at all. They said the portrayal of Morrison as out of control all the time was way over the top wrong.
Oh the stoner thing I bet was overplayed.
But you're saying the way he beat chicks was overplayed? Hmm I'd stand corrected on that one if it's the case.
Doors are great! They're quite high on my vinyl rotation these days.
Nothing like riders on the storm with that analog record hiss.
Best version of the self-titled album is the fourtieth anniversary CD. Light My Fire is at the correct speed for the first time ever. It was always supposed to be in A, not G sharp.
not sure if i should put this hear, but since its doors related i will.
I liked otep's version of not to touch the earth
Nononono, you can't cover perfection. Not even Glenn Danzig, and he can sound like Jim at times.
I agree. And don't even get me started on the atrocity that was Creed covering Roadhouse Blues.
I didn't know that about Light My Fire being at the incorrect pitch. To be honest, though, I don't think I'd like it as much in A. It would sound too bright and upbeat. I mean, sure, it is one of their most upbeat songs, but nah...It's amazing how changing the key, even by just a half step, can completely change the mood and intention of a song.
It's supposed to be. The band themselves have stated that, and all the live performances, and the sheet music are in the Key of A.
I had no idea that song was supposed to be in the key of A.
The comment about a half step changing the entire meaning and intent of the song is spot on.
I have perfect pitch, so that half a step, for me, makes it an entirely different song.
Wow
Yeah, I like it. Jim sounds a little too Elvis-like to me slowed down anyway. Haha.
Imprecator,
I saw that you sent me a quicknote when I was offline the other day about looking for a good source of vinyl.
You can get a lot of great stuff off ebay and amazon.
I think most of my own Doors stuff came out of my local record store, but I've gotten a lot of good stuff offline.
There's some very affordable vinyl to be had on the interwebs: it just takes a bit of skouting to find it.
Always try to buy vinyl from highly rated sellers if you look for it on amazon.
Groovy man. I'll have a look.
And for those fans who are interested, you can hear the infamous 1969 Miami concert on youtube.
